Buyer Places Order

Buyer pays the full amount including shipping through Shoal secure checkout. Payment is immediately captured and secured by Stripe.

Funds are released to your connected Stripe account. Arrives in your bank within 1 to 5 business days depending on your seller tier.

Tracking Protects You
If your tracking shows delivered to the correct address a claim of non-delivery will not succeed. Always use tracked shipping.
Your Messages are Evidence
Every message sent through Shoal is stored and can be reviewed. Clear communication protects you.
Return Required for Refunds
For items over $75 buyers must return the item before receiving a refund. They cannot keep the item and get their money back.
Review Extortion is Banned
If a buyer threatens a bad review to get money from you report it immediately. This is against our rules and the buyer faces consequences.

Honest sellers who follow these guidelines win disputes. Here is exactly what to do.

📸 Use Real Photos

Always photograph the actual item you are selling from multiple angles. Show any defects clearly. These photos are your first line of defense if a buyer claims item not as described.

📝 Write Accurate Descriptions

Be specific about condition age features and any flaws. An accurate description that matches your photos is extremely hard to dispute successfully.

📬 Always Use Tracked Shipping

Never ship without tracking. A tracking number showing delivered to the correct address wins a not received dispute almost every time.

📷 Photograph Before Shipping

Take photos of the item packaged and ready to ship. This proves the item was in good condition when it left your hands and protects against false damage claims.

💬 Communicate Through Shoal

Keep all conversations inside Shoal messages. This creates a timestamped record of everything discussed. Never move conversations to WhatsApp or phone calls for deal related discussions.

📦 Package Items Carefully

Use proper packaging appropriate for the item. Fragile items need bubble wrap and sturdy boxes. Poorly packaged items that arrive damaged are the sellers responsibility regardless of how the shipping was handled.

What Seller Protection Does Not Cover

We believe in being completely transparent. Here is where seller protection has limits.

⚠️ Inaccurate Listings

If your listing photos or description do not accurately represent the item and the buyer receives something different you are not protected from a refund claim.
Lesson: Always be 100% honest in your listings.

⚠️ Late Shipping

If you do not ship within your stated handling time and the buyer opens a dispute you have limited protection.
Lesson: Only set handling times you can reliably meet.

⚠️ No Tracking Provided

If you ship without tracking and a buyer claims non-delivery we cannot verify you shipped the item at all.
Lesson: Always use tracked shipping for every order no exceptions.

⚠️ Prohibited Item Sales

If you sell a prohibited item you have no protection at all. The listing will be removed your account may be suspended and any dispute will be resolved in the buyer's favour.
Lesson: Only sell allowed items.

⚠️ Off-Platform Transactions

If you agree to conduct a transaction outside of Shoal to avoid fees you receive zero protection from Shoal for anything that goes wrong.
Lesson: All transactions must happen through Shoal.

⚠️ Fraudulent Activity

If you engage in any fraudulent activity on the platform you lose all protections and face permanent account termination and potential legal action.
Lesson: Be honest. Always.

Tips for Seller Success

Having a Problem with a Buyer?

We are on your side as long as you are selling honestly.

Step 1: Try to Resolve Directly

Message the buyer through Shoal messages. Most issues are misunderstandings that resolve quickly with good communication.

Step 2: Respond to Disputes Promptly

If a buyer opens a dispute respond within 3 business days. Upload all your evidence — photos messages tracking information. The more evidence you provide the stronger your case.

Step 4: Report Buyer Misconduct

If a buyer threatens you uses abusive language or attempts review extortion report them immediately through our Trust and Safety page. We take seller harassment extremely seriously.

Seller Protection FAQs

A1: You receive your payout after the buyer confirms delivery in their dashboard. If the buyer does not confirm within 7 days of tracking showing delivered your funds are released automatically. Payout speed depends on your seller tier ranging from next business day for Platinum sellers to 3 to 5 days for new Bronze sellers.
A2: This is why we strongly recommend always using tracked shipping. If your tracking shows the item was delivered to the correct address the dispute will almost certainly be resolved in your favour. Without tracking we have no way to verify delivery and the buyer may receive a refund.
A3: Respond to the dispute within 3 days. Upload all your evidence including photos of the item before shipping tracking information and your original listing screenshots. Our team reviews all evidence fairly and protects honest sellers from bad faith claims.
A4: Only buyers with verified completed purchases can leave reviews. If you believe a review is false or violates our guidelines you can flag it for admin review. Clearly malicious or false reviews can be removed. However genuine negative reviews even if you disagree with them are part of our transparent community standard.
A5: For items over $75 a return is required before a refund is issued. Buyers cannot keep the item and receive a full refund. If a buyer refuses to return an item their refund will be withheld until the return is completed.
A6: You should only list items you currently have in your possession. If you need to cancel an order contact our support team immediately. Frequent cancellations negatively impact your seller rating and may result in account restrictions.
A7: Zero tolerance policy. Report the buyer immediately to support@shoalmarketplace.com with screenshots of the harassment. We take seller safety as seriously as buyer safety. Abusive buyers face immediate account suspension.
A8: Email support@shoalmarketplace.com within 7 days of the decision with subject line: DISPUTE APPEAL Include your order ID and any new evidence not previously submitted. Our team will conduct a secondary review. All appeal decisions are final.
