The Problem
"Like most Bahamians I have been there.
You see something for sale online. You message the seller. You agree on a price. And then comes the anxiety where do we meet? Is this person real? Should I bring someone with me? Is this item actually what they said it is?
I have heard too many stories. Friends getting scammed. People getting robbed during meetups. Hard earned money gone with absolutely no way to get it back. No recourse. No protection. Just a loss and a lesson.
And the worst part? Everyone just accepted it as normal. As if this is just how things work in the Bahamas.
I refused to accept that."
The Realization
"I started asking around and realized this was not just my experience. This was every Bahamian's experience.
Mothers afraid to sell their children's old clothes online because they did not want strangers knowing their address.
Young people getting scammed buying phones and electronics that turned out to be fake or broken.
Small business owners losing customers because people were too scared to buy from someone they did not personally know.
We had a buying and selling culture in the Bahamas, Facebook groups, WhatsApp chats, roadside stalls, but zero infrastructure to make it safe.
That gap was the opportunity."
The Vision
"I envisioned a platform built specifically for us. For Bahamians. Understanding our islands our culture and our challenges.
Not a copy of eBay or Amazon but something made for the reality of living and doing business across 30 islands in the Caribbean.
A platform where:
Your money is protected before you hand it over.
You know exactly who you are buying from.
If something goes wrong someone has your back.
You never have to meet a stranger in a parking lot again.
That vision became Shoal."
The Name
"We named it Shoal for a reason.
A shoal is a group of fish swimming together, stronger as a unit than any one fish alone. That is exactly what we are building.
A community of Bahamians supporting each other. Buying from each other. Trusting each other. Growing together.
The fish in our logo is not just a symbol. It represents every single person on our platform, buyers sellers and dreamers, all swimming in the same direction toward a better Bahamas. 🌊"
The Build
"Building Shoal was not easy.
We had to solve problems that platforms like eBay and Amazon never had to think about.
How do you do secure payments when many Bahamians prefer cash?
How do you deliver to Andros or Long Island when there is no national courier infrastructure?
How do you verify seller identities without making it too complicated for everyday people to use?
Every single challenge made us think harder and build smarter. Every obstacle made Shoal more Bahamian."
Today
"Today Shoal Marketplace is live and growing.
Sellers are listing everything from iPhones to fishing boats to handmade Bahamian crafts.
Buyers are shopping from the comfort of their homes knowing their money is protected.
Families are selling what they no longer need and using that money for what matters.
And nobody is meeting strangers in parking lots anymore.
That is the Shoal promise. That is our story. And we are just getting started. 🇧🇸"
